We're currently on a 12 Mbps plan (1Mbps up) for the cable modem. We started out I think with 1Mbps, they just kept cranking up the data rate on the plan we're getting. However, given the amount that we download these days (not much), and the fact that work just told me they were going to stop paying for my connection, I'm thinking the basic 1M down, 128k up plan would probably be just fine. It's $20/month instead of $55/month.

So I've got the modem set to QoS us to 1M/128K for a few days to see how it goes. Right now it seems fine, I just downloaded a couple hundred megs, and did some VPN/remote desktop to work at the same time, and it seemed OK. The remote desktop was a bit slow while the download was going, but it sped back up again just fine after, and I don't actually remote desktop that much and can shut down big download jobs when I need to.

Honestly, I don't see a lot of difference, and if it stays that way I'll be just as happy to keep the $35/month.

We pay ~$40 / month for 2M down / 1M up. It's fine for us -- except Doug, who wants to play multi-player Mine craft.
