I need to remember reading this study and realize, yes, they are.

I can't believe that someone can grow up in a first world country and be that ignorant. You must have to actually work at it.

It could be that people weren't really paying attention to how the question about the sun & the earth were worded... sometimes I give off a quick response when I haven't really "heard" the question, and of course it's totally stupid. The act of listening is hard work.

Otherwise, though... there are a lot of people who seem to be more interested in contemporary culture (i.e., Dancing with the Stars) than math, science, or history. And I don't know what to say about that, except that... for every generation, there's a gap. ;-)

Not so bad, really--somewhere around 80% of the responses were substantially correct. That's better than I would have predicted.
