NPR was talking about the book "Railroaded: The Transcontinentals and the Making of Modern America" and I thought "that sounds interesting."

$21 hardcover everywhere. At Amazon, the Kindle edition is $18. At B&N, the Nook edition is $28.

What the hell? I guess I'd better try a little harder to get that Kindle DRM breaking software working.

Why on earth would any eBook edition be MORE than the treeware edition? That makes NO sense. Is the $21 the actual cover price, or just the price everyone is selling it for? Not that it should matter...

Exactly. And not just more than paperback, or even more than trade paper. It's significantly more than HARDCOVER.

Honestly, there's just no way. I either won't read it at all, I'll get it from the library, or I'll pirate it. If I could buy it for $6 or $8 I'd buy it, but I'm not paying $18 or more for it.

"Let's see, the ebook edition is cheaper to produce, cheaper to distribute, cheaper to warehouse, I can't loan it out and I'm not allowed to sell it or even give it away when I'm done with it. Sure, I think it TOTALLY makes sense that I should pay MORE for that."
