I put the power supply they shipped with my 3D printer into my computer - the one out of the computer is able to make the printer work and the computer doesn't need as much power.

The one they shipped is kind of a hunk of junk. It's probably the cheapest ATX supply they could find that theoretically met the specs. But...
Their supply: the fan is noisy as hell, and despite being rated "500 watts" can't hold temperature on the printer bed
My supply: absolutely silent fan, rated 430 watts and brings everything up to temperature as much as possible and holds it there.

FWIW this is a Corsair 430 PSU. I have bought two of them now and they're cheap ($45 I think) and awesome - it has a 28 amp 12 volt rail.

The Corsair is going back into my computer and this junky thing into the spare parts bin as soon as those new power supplies for the printer get here, which should be by end of week (shipping from NY tomorrow).

  • Steve Simmons - I've had very good luck quieting power supplies by replacing the fans and isolating the vibration from the frame with thin rubber gaskets. For gasket material I used an old anti-static mat that had something corrosive spilled on it. A few minutes with an xacto knife, some slightly longer bolts, and poof - much, much quieter.
  • John Ridley - This isn't vibration, it's wind noise. It's just a crappy fan. The better supply has the same size (120mm) fan and blows as much air but you can't hear it at all.
  • Steve Simmons - How much heat comes out when it's under load? If not a lot, I've got a very quiet 80mm fan you're welcome to. It doesn't move quite as many cubic feet of air per minute, but has little wind noise and much quieter bearings compared to most.
  • John Ridley - It really doesn't matter. This is just the junky power supply that came with my 3D printer, and I've already ordered a replacement. The printer's heated print bed really needs 24 volts at at least 15 amps. As soon as those come in my GOOD power supply will come back into this machine and this junky thing will be a backup. It's always good to have a spare power supply sitting around.
