The Boat of a Million Years by Poul Anderson

This book does some interesting social exploration. It's at once fairly pessimistic about the future and very optimistic. (mini spoiler) Humanity as a whole conquers death but then ceases to have any urge to explore. But those who have always been beyond death carry on to the stars.

There were definitely plausible ideas in this book that I hadn't come across before. That's always worthwhile.

It took me about 8 weeks to get through this book. Not because it wasn't interesting, but because I have been running low on sleep and never got more than 3 or 4 pages done before falling asleep. Also it's an interesting story but not a page-turner; I wanted to read it but was never compelled to stay up until 3AM reading.
