My RAID 5 array is reporting a failed drive. I think it's just being nervous. I've taken it out of the MD and am running tests on it. It'll probably take a day to finish (1.5T drive). I really don't want to buy any more drives.

*update - probably more like 6 days to test the drive. This seems kind of silly. I have stopped it and restarted it in Screen. Hope I don't lose any more drives in the next week.

There's a reason EMC wants anything under 10K and over 750GB to be striped as raid 6 or 10. The rebuild times just kill you with the big disks.

It is quite possible that the faster rebuild is to backup, reformat onto a new drive, then restore.

True, unfortunately I don't have enough space to back this stuff up. Over half of what is on the drive is stuff I've decided I won't cry if it gets lost.

22.9% done, no errors so far.

It'll actually probably be December before I finish the surface test and finish the rebuild.
