OK, new 1.5T in place, data copied to it. ddrescue left only 850K of data unrecoverable. I don't know what files are involved, but honestly there's nothing super important on that drive. The family photo/video archive is on the volume but was all on the volume on the first couple of drives, so shouldn't be in danger.
It took almost 24 hours to do the drive copy. On a healthy drive it would have taken about 5.
I also installed a new DVD writer in this machine this evening. The old one stopped recognizing blank DVDs (though it would do blank CDs and would read DVDs)
I'm going to run WD Windiag on all the drives over the next few days. I think this machine has had more than its fair share of attention lately; to average out to a normal PC for me it will have to run without issue for about 20 years, so I hope it's about done being cranky.
