I'm catching up on downloading MST3K episodes on DVD from DAPCentral (they're even legal, as much as possible). The transport of choice there is eDonkey 2000. It beats the HELL out of hard drives. Mine has been chattering nonstop for 24 hours now, and I have a couple of days left to go to get the 6 DVDs that I'm behind on. I only remember to go out and catch up every 3 or 4 months, but luckily they're only releasing an episode every 2 to 4 weeks.

Two words: RAM Disk

I don't have 30 GB of RAM on this machine. It's randomly accessing the files I'm downloading as segments are downloaded from others and sent to others from me. I'd have to have it download to RAM disc. Then if I had a power flicker I'd have to start over.

The 30GB is a problem. The flicker just needs a UPS. That said, I've not seen that kind of beating with either Azureus (not an option for eDonkey), or eMule though. A defrag might help. If the 30GB was contigous, it would be a lot less head movement than if it's scattered hither and yon.
