You must be using one of the very old friends templates. I think the newer ones dynamically resize images to screen size. I didn't realize that this was still an issue (I figured everyone would have gone to a newer template by now, it's been several years).

I've limited the width, that should help.

Oh yeah, this is why I tried Firefox. Livejournal comment system is broken for Chrome.

Thanks for the tip. I'll see if I can find a new Friends template that works for me; the one LJ foisted on me a while back did the typical trick of using a narrow middle column for no particular purpose - the dreaded Facebook effect.

They probably all do. However, with a modern monitor, there's plenty of width to go around anyway. YMMV.
