I think Murphy must be more interested in causing irritation than in minimizing pleasure.
1/2" and 9/16" wrenches are probably the most useful SAE wrenches to have. Today I found these (in two different places a couple of miles apart) on the road. They were not there yesterday.

I thought "wow, very unusual to find two such highly useful things." Then I realized that someone was going to have a significantly worse day if they got to work missing these. Therefore, the irritation caused the other guy outweighs my delight in finding these rather than something like a 5/8" wrench, or yet another screwdriver.

When I was little my grandpa would regularly stop at the side of the road to pick up dropped tools. If they were like this they'd usually be taken back to Sears for replacement.

Two observations:
  1. I suspect these useful wrenches where sitting under someones hood when they closed it.

  2. Add a 11/16" and another 1/2" and you've got a Manhasset music stand repair kit!

Okay . . . sometimes you need a pipe wrench, too.

Only the one is a Craftsman, and it's nowhere near messed up enough to bother with a replacement yet.

A cousin once had a manager give us a hard time about getting replacements for some worn sockets, saying they "looked OK to him." So they took them back home, put them on an anvil and squashed them all with a sledge hammer, and came back and said "OK, how do they look to you now?" The manager apparently didn't bother them anymore.
