things and stuff
Apr. 15th, 2023 07:56 amI've been rounding up and refining my stuff to be packed for the Katy Trail trip, which is slated to start April 24. It will probably proceed, though a few events including a COVID scare from the organizer makes it slightly questionable.
Yesterday I bought a Garmin InReach Mini 2. It is a satellite communicator and GPS so I can check in, leave a trail of where I've been and where I am, and send and receive texts even if out of cell range, and it has an SOS button in case I get in trouble somewhere. Bought with work gift funds, and the monthly seems worth it for the functionality.
My hiking buddy and I are very much looking forward to kayaking season. Mid-May probably. Water is running high and fast now and is cold. Some people are probably going out already but I also saw new of a SAR call for a hypothermia case in a capsized boat yesterday, I'll just wait a few weeks. We also have one day bicycle trip in West Michigan and perhaps one or two others elsewhere (probably with my Kalamazoo friend not my normal buddy). We're working out timing - getting across the state and staging cars and still getting to the trail head for an 8AM start might require an overnight.
I've been trying to catch up on cleaning and maintenance on my older motorcycle - I rode it in the winter and it is showing, the spokes were gross and a lot of gunk and some corrosion. I'm trying to polish everything back up and get some protection on it.
The new bike I quite like. I think I would actually be OK with it as my only bike, though on the expressway the lack of wind protection would probably get a little irritating after an hour or three. I do have a bigger windscreen that would fix that, I just like running with the little one most of the time in the summer. I just put a baffle in the muffler yesterday and the sound is much better now. It was too staccato and loud before, now it's much more mellow.
