I found a wallet by the roadside for the first time today. Really odd since it was out on a rural road in the middle of nowhere; you would only be on that road if you were going to some local house, or if you were lost.

Opened it up enough to find the driver's license, saw that the owner was a woman from Toledo, which is 70 miles away. I had thought it would almost certainly be a local since the road goes nowhere on the way to anywhere. I didn't rifle through it but it looked like it had some cash and a lot of credit cards and such in it.

I dropped it by the cop shop on my way through town a few minutes later. That station is normally unmanned. There was a woman inside cleaning, she let me in, we wrote down some info and left it on the desk for the next officer that checked in to work on.

As I suspected, the woman who was cleaning is an officer. She was just cleaning up before getting on her uniform for the day. I didn't think the station was big enough to bother having cleaning staff, but since I handed it over to someone in civvies, I wanted to confirm that it got to an officer.

Since there's nobody there most of the day, I sent a fax and she called me back a few minutes later.

I've lost my wallet in the past and it was dropped into a normal post box. It turns out that the US Post office gets wallets like this all the time and apparently it is SOP to make a serious effort to return them. Usually they open the wallet and if ID is present, they mail it back, but in this cast I was in San Francisco on business and they called my boss at work and he contacted me to tell me which post office to go to pick it back up...

That's very useful info, thanks. Next time I get one I'll go to the post office first. Of course, they don't open until well after I'm already at work.
